The trend we’d like to see everyone wear in 2021

Let’s be honest: Minimalist neutrals were so popular the past few years you’d think showoff, maximalist designs wouldn’t dominate the fashion industry any time soon. But trendsetters really said, “Not on our damn watch.” If you look at the Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear collections of global luxury brands like Chanel, Gucci, Celine, and Louis Vuitton, you’d notice how most of their pieces are… voluminous. Puffy sleeves, padded shoulders, and oversized cuts, among others, are the brands’ common highlights. There’s one design that caught our attention the most though—ruffles (a.k.a frills).

Maybe you’re wondering why it made the most impact on us. And maybe you’re mocking us in your head saying, “It’s just ruffles, it’s not that deep.” But here’s the thing: Most people aren’t too fond of frills. Some think only children would look cute dressed in it, while others think they’d only wear it to a formal event. In other words, it’s not something you’d willingly wear on a casual day.

But what if we make ruffles wearable for an everyday look? Cool, here are some of our style inspos.

Jang Manwol

If you haven’t watched “Hotel del Luna” yet, you’d probably think Jang Manwol (Lee Jieun) was wearing this fluor skirt to an important occasion—probably a friend’s wedding or a blind date. Well, you’re hella wrong. First of all, Jang Manwol was asocial. She refused to talk to people so she had no friends—what more a date? So where was she really going with that skirt? To catch wandering ghosts.

Yup, leave it to Jang Manwol to wear an attention-grabbing skirt to search for supernatural beings. But who’s complaining? Not us. In fact, this just proves our point: Ruffles aren’t just for formal events anymore.

Y’all can wear ruffles to do paranormal activities for all we care. You can also wear it to a walk in the park with your pet dog or at home binge watching horror films on Netflix. Trust us, no one will judge you (unless your dog is a fashion police or something).

Lara Jean

Remember the dress Lara Jean wore in the final scene of “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You”? The mint green evening gown that had romantic ruffles all the way down to the hem? Yeah, that was iconic. And not to be controversial, but the dress was more remarkable than the scene itself—well, at least for us. We don’t even remember what happened there exactly. All we remember was the dress looked magical AF (a literal “no thoughts, head full of Lara Jean’s gown” moment).

Let’s be real though: The ’fit looked really good but also, very uncomfortable. You wouldn’t casually wear this dress, say, to a coffee date with friends, would you? Opt for a more casual version of the look—one that is comfier and more appropriate for an everyday look. You can even partner it with any type of shoes: sandals, flats, sneakers, combat boots, or whatever footwear you wanna wear.

K-pop idols

We’re not sure if you’re aware, but most of the Korean idols we know today double as fashion trendsetters. There was this one time when Blackpink members wore designs from an online boutique that supports the BLM movement (it was for their “Ice Cream” music video) and not even an hour later, all items were already sold out.

Yup, the sold-out power of K-pop idols is really unrivaled. Un-freaking-matched. So now that more of them wear ruffle tops, we expect nothing less than ruffles going extremely viral in 2021.

Out of the three inspos we’ve introduced, this might be the most wearable and the easiest to find. Dare we say, it’s so comfy you can even wear it to sleep. No kidding.

Now if you wanna make it look a bit dressier, say, for a business meeting you’re attending, layering is key. Many K-pop girls wear oversized coats on top of their ruffle tops, while some tuck it in their pencil skirts.
